Rosenfield, 1908
Karl Rosenfield is a classic, much-loved peony known for its bold, velvety crimson-red blooms. The large, fully double flowers opens mid season and makes an excellent cut flower, holding their rich colour and form beautifully in arrangements.
From the 1916 catalogue of American nurseryman Bertrand H. Farr: “This variety exhibited by me at the exhibition of the American Peony Society, in June, 1911, received First Prize for the best new Peony not in commerce before 1908”.
Well 120 years later and it is no longer a new peony. It has stood the test of time and is widely grown today precisely because it can be relied upon to produce a good show of lustrous beetroot red flowers year after year.
Named after the hybridizer’s son, the peony Karl Rosenfield honors John Rosenfield, a nurseryman in Omaha, Nebraska, and a Swedish immigrant
