Pillow / Christman, W.F., 1936

A friend of mine once raved about this flower. She used it for her daughter's graduation party and described it as cloud-like. I remembered her enthusiasm but noticed she hadn't kept the plant in her collection. At the time, I thought she might have been overhyping its beauty.

A couple of years ago, I came across these plants and decided to include them in my commercial rotation. They bloomed last year (their third year), and I must say—they exceeded all expectations. This plant deserves every bit of praise and is, in fact, underappreciated. The flowers are stunningly beautiful, large, and subtly fragrant, with a cloud-like quality that’s truly enchanting.

This peony also holds a sentimental value for me. My eldest daughter often points out "cotton candy skies" during pink sunsets, and this flower reminds me of her love for all things pink.

The plant grows quite tall, so staking is necessary to maintain its upright beauty. While the stems are strong and don’t immediately topple under the weight of rain-soaked blooms, proper staking ensures the flowers stay magnificently upright.

  • Observations of height, side buds, and staking are from Hudson, Quebec (zone 5a) grown in full sun, in a clay based soil. In different environments plants will perform slightly different. Instead of 1 to 2 side buds per stem, you may have none. If growing in slightly shadier environment, your peony may require staking. The observations are meant as a general guide, in how your peony should perform in optimal planting. In the case of fragrance, these are observations based on personal sniff tests in the field, we must bear in mind our olfactory senses are all different.
